Nobody was ever born a leader. While some may appear like born leaders, the truth remains that people build themselves to be effective and impactful leaders through continuous, purposeful efforts.

Leadership skills can be learned and can become ingrained in you over time. Whether you are a team leader, business owner, or even an aspiring leader, there are basic indisputable traits you must acquire if you must be deemed fit for leadership.

And here are 7 of these traits:

1. Vision

Roy Bennett said, "Good leaders have a vision and inspire others to help them turn their vision into reality. Great leaders have a vision, share vision, and inspire others to create their own."

A vision shared gives people a reason to believe and work with you. Vision remains the driving force for any effective leader. It is the decisive factor that determines the leader's influence over his subordinates. Vision is the soil on which an organization thrives. A leader who has vision can truly inspire others and breed more ideas that would birth a sustainable community.

2. Communication

This is the most important and effective tool for leading a group of people. A leader must learn to speak clearly and listen patiently. Through effective communication, the leader can motivate and inspire the team towards achieving the objectives of the organization.

3. Accountability

This is a crucial trait that should be found in every leader. A leader must be able to take responsibility not just for their direction actions, but for the (in)actions of their subordinates. A leader should be able to account for all resources—financial, human, material—of the organization.

4. Integrity

A leader should stick to his word and lead by example. As C.S Lewis said: “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.” This implies that a leader must be true and honest in word and deed. A leader who fails in any of these would in turn propagate dishonest followers, because they are invariably looking up to him.

5. Empathy

Empathy is being able to understand the people you're leading and place yourself in their shoes. Alfred Adler defines it as "seeing with the eyes of another and feeling with the heart of another." It goes beyond being nice. It is the ladder that connects the leader and his followers—enabling him to understand their pain, hopes, and dreams. Empathy gives the leader the capacity to draw good judgment, inspire the team, and foster creativity.

6. Humility

Being humble as a leader doesn't make you a weakling. It means that you are inclined to admit you could be wrong, that you understand you may not have all the answers. It means that you possess the self-confidence and self-awareness to recognize the importance of others without feeling threatened. And this ability is strength.

7. Positive disposition

Be positive minded at all times. A positive disposition keeps your team motivated and nudges them towards building a successful business with you. They can readily meet you for anything knowing that they are always welcomed.

The ability to take risks in achieving your goals lies in your courage. Whether in a daunting or buoying circumstance, courage is what a leader needs to forge ahead.
